Winter Lip Fix !

Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Like many others, I'm sure, I feel like I have been blessed with an amazing Winter-esque weather lately, but also cursed with one of its drawback; chapped lips. Now, that's a common problem for anyone who lives in a fairly humid continental region like Montreal and for years now, I have been fighting against it, using various techniques I put together and perfected with time. Today, I thought I'd share with you my go-to routine for a chapped lips quick fix and my tips & tricks to prevent our little soft pouts from getting dry and sore.

Always work on humid, not dry lips
This routine begins with a mandatory step: dampening your lips with a washcloth and some warm water. Why ? You absolutely do not was to start scrubbing off your lips dead skins while dry, it'll hurt like crazy and will probably leave you bleeding, for all we know. Take a minute of two to simply pat your lips with the cloth and wait until they start to feel smoother.

Gently exfoliate
Pick your favourite lip scrub. I personally love Fresh's Sugar Lip Polish, which exfoliates my lips while still keep them moisturized. It's unique formula is enriched with real brown sugar crystals to gently buff away dry flakes. It nourishes the lips with the oils of meadowfoam seed, jojoba seed, and grapeseed while shea butter provides long-lasting moisture. Simply dip your finger in the scrub and scoop out a dime size. Then, rub it on your lip area for about a minute, or until your like you've got rid of all the flakes and dead skins.

**Tips: Did you know you could also make your own lip scrub by mixing equal parts of coarse sugar and vaseline to a half-part of raw honey ? Mix the whole thing in a bowl, transfer to a cosmetic (damp-proof) container and use once a twice weekly !

Moisturize and hydrate
Once you're done with the exfoliating part, take back your damp washcloth to remove the scrub from your lips. Do it ever so gently to prevent scratches ! Apply a fair amount of Vaseline to your lips, using a lip brush if you don't have any of these cool easy-to-apply sticks. I find using a lip brush quite effective because it covers more surface area and the edges are sharp enough for detailing and contouring the lips.

The waiting game…
This is probably the less fun part of this whole routine; You actually have to keep yourself busy for a little while because we want to wait long enough to have the Vaseline fully penetrates and deeply moisturize your lips. It takes mine about 10 to 15 minutes to feel naturally smooth and soft again, which isn't to bad. Gives me time to to the dishes of clean up my desk real quick ;)

Swipe off & balm up !
Final step: Wipe the remaining amount of jelly off with your washcloth (which should still be damp - if not, rinse it again with warm water and proceed!), and finish your pout off with a good layer of hydrating lip balm. I am suck a sucker for EOS's signature sphere lip balms which are 95% organic, packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter and jojoba oil to keep your lips moist, soft and sensationally smooth !
